Industry commentators have largely positive about the news, but Andy McEwan, a senior manager, product ethernet point-to-point, Virgin Media Business, said the software upgrade opens the floodgates for the type of virus that is more in data networks.

He said: "In simple terms, operators face the tsunami of data. The iPhone and other smartphones have been completely overhauled how we interact with our phones and what we expect of them. With applications from gaming, online shopping and Facebook, a network service operators begin to feel the strain of large data transfers. Today the software upgrade, just open the floodgates for more.

"As handset manufacturers rush to compete with the iPhone, we're just going to see more data hitting the operator's network. To avoid traffic congestion caused virtually, operators must ensure they have the network speed and agility to push forward innovation in the mobile. "
